Between the unusually cold and dry spring here and the pesky vole which tunneled beneath the lavender plants— eating the roots— all but one of my lavender plants needed to be replaced. A year ago at this time, the lavender was already putting up bloom stalks, and I made lots of lavender wands, fragrant bundles (with juniper, sage, and lavender), small lavender sachets, and ‘Star Jars’— with some soothing items, including lavender.
The final freeze date here is June 6th, but the forecast looks to be above freezing for the lows in the week ahead, so I put the new plants in yesterday. I’m hoping that they will ‘bloom where they are planted’ so that I can continue to add lavender to items that I make for the gallery.
End-of-year reports and portfolios for my preschool students are due next week, so I’m not opening Star Garden Gallery this weekend, but I did go up to El Morro today for my weekly visit and walkabout on the land. It’s still very quiet around here as far as the tourist season goes, but it promises to be much better than last summer with the covid closures.
Enjoy the longer days and warmer weather as summer approaches!
