Ruminating about Ramah

In June, we celebrated four years living here in Ramah, and I find myself loving this place more than I ever thought I would. Perhaps it’s the big sky over this tiny town— this ‘ocean of sky’ reminds me of the view of Brewster’s tidal flats on Cape Cod— watching the ever-changing expanse of sky and land. Maybe it’s the candy-striped sandstone cliffs that edge Ramah Lake, and that we can see from our kitchen window while doing the dishes. Or, the tiny ‘take a book/leave a book’ box on a side street near the school. It might be because I teach the youngest learners in the town, and I already have four ‘repeat’ families this year— I am teaching several younger siblings of prior preschool students, so I know their families, and feel ‘known’. Maybe it’s the extraordinary night sky with the slice of Milky Way streaming overhead. I know that my rose-colored glasses are on, and that there are difficult and challenging things about this place, but that seems to be true for most places that we choose to call home. So, today, I am choosing to share a few of my favorite things about Ramah with some photos— all taken in the past few weeks of October— the sky, the cliffs at Ramah Lake, the free Library Box, a night sky photo, and a recent weaving, titled Autumn Evening, that I completed at the start of October— just in time for the fall show at the Old School Gallery in El Morro.
